In most of the cases the cause of back pain is continued use of uncomfortable bed, particularly the one that has lumps. If you happen to be using an old mattress full of protruding lumps, you are most likely to have to have uncomfortable sleepless nights. Yet, there are even new mattresses that fail to provide the needed comfort while sleeping.

If you were unfortunate to spend considerable amount to buy a new mattress that couldn’t offer the expected level of comfort there is a smart way to tide over the problem. You could buy a new mattress topper and enjoy sleeping comfortably.

A mattress topper levels the surface of your primary mattress and makes it more even, while keeping the bulges of the mattress out of sight at the same time. As the name suggests, it is to be kept on top of your main mattress. But take care to buy the right one.

When looking for a suitable mattress keep your personal comfort as the main criteria for deciding the material and brand. Of course you can get the views of others thru the Internet, but keep in mind that the comfort level varies from person to person. So if some material is proven comfortable for some users, it doesn’t necessarily mean that it will prove to be equally comfortable for you.

It will be worth trying latex toppers or memory foam mattress toppers, as these two are proven to be helpful for relieving back pain. Memory foam is especially helpful in easing pressure from the pressure points, and memory refers to its capacity to memorize the contours of your body and conform to the same. It has the ability to adjust to the temperature of your body too.

If you prefer to have a memory foam mattress topper, you should not overlook its density. Though it is often suggested to have a mattress with density of five pounds, even four pounds is enough and at times prove better than those with higher densities. It will still offer a slight lushness needed by the back.

On the other hand, Latex being resilient by nature enables you to sleep without any back pain. Latex mattress has pinholes evenly spread over its surface that go to absorb the body weight. This material also adjusts itself to the contours of your body enabling you to have a comfortable sleep. The best part of latex is that it strikes a perfect balance between comfort and support.

The toppers from these two materials are surely more expensive than the regular variety because of to the strict quality control measures followed at the manufacturing stage. But the helpful feature is that you get them with a warranty ensuring the quality of the product. So, look for a manufacturer that offers better warranty. Some of the manufacturers may even offer thirty days trial enabling you to test the product to your satisfaction.

Now that you have been lucky enough to get a memory foam mattress topper without spending a penny, it may get too big for your bed. You’ll be wasting your time and effort by trying to tape it down the sides. You would be better off if you cut it down to the required size. It may sound very difficult but isn’t really that hard.

Technically, it’s possible to cut the memory foam topper using your kitchen shears, but it becomes too difficult, time consuming and uncomfortable with that pair of scissors that leaves behind red painful marks on your hand. Probably you have an electric knife at home that you would be using for cutting the Thanksgiving turkey and Christmas ham. Even if you don’t have one, request one of your good neighbors to lend you theirs.

The next move is to take measurement of your bed. Deducting a quarter inch from all the sides, draw the size directly on the foam using a thick pen or marker. The idea of cutting short by that quarter inch of the size of mattress is to make it convenient for you to pull up the sheets over the mattress topper.

Now, position the foam on top of a table, in such a manner that the end you plan to cut first is just over the edge. Using the knife as if you were cutting a turkey, slightly exert pressure on the knife to cut a clean line through the memory foam. Just as you wouldn’t use the knife in an up and down manner for cutting a turkey, same way handle the knife for cutting the foam. The vibrating knife would cut along a straight line but if you exert too much pressure or work too fast, you may cause the mattress topper to have jagged edges.

Cutting of only the first side may be somewhat difficult but once you have done that, rest will be easy and you will be glad that you made an effort to get a new memory foam mattress topper that perfectly fits your bed.
